What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a grappling martial art that utilizes technique and leverage to impose strangle holds and joint locks while on the ground, allowing a person to defend him or herself effectivly against a stronger and larger opponent. While many hand-to-hand martial arts rely on strikes using speed and power, Brazilian jiu-jitsu takes a different approach: speed and power are not a requirement and are oftentimes not necessary. Rather than relying on strikes, BJJ emphasizes closing the distance between you and your opponent and taking him or her to the ground where technique and leverage can be used to apply submissions or strike more efficiently.
What can BJJ and your school for for me?

BJJ is a highly effective form of self-defense that promotes a healthy lifestyle through numerous side benefits, including exercise, flexibility, self-confidence, discipline, and structure. Adding BJJ to your routine can help you get in shape, gain confidence, and release stress, all while forming a network of like-minded people sure to motivate and inspire you. Our academies not only excel in this great martial art, but offer a safe, friendly, and family-style atmosphere that many of our students consider their second home.
Do I need to be in shape for this?

No, we will get you in shape!  We encourage all fitness levels and  have many students whose exercise routines were limited or non-existent prior to joining the academy. Our team will ensure a progressive and gradual plan to help you acclimate to our programs while achieving your fitness goals.
Am I too old to train?

No, no one is ever to old to train.  We have students of all ages, each with different goals in mind. Whether you are 15 or 65, our classes and programs are designed to provide results at any age and are enjoyed by both younger and older students.
Will I be expected to compete?

No.  We always encourage competition for those who wish to do so but it is NOT a requirement.
Do I need to have prior experience?

No. No one needs to have practiced in any form of martial art to train at our academy.
Do you offer beginner level classes?

Yes. We have beginner level classes that are designed for students with no experience through up to one year of experience. These classes stress the BJJ basics necessary to build a solid base and grow in a healthy and productive manner.
Do you offer striking or kickboxing classes?

Yes. We teach a traditional style of kickboxing called Muay Thai. This particular art is a great complement to BJJ and is another major component of mixed martial arts today. In addition, it is a fantastic workout and a great way to keep in shape. Click the following link for more information about our Muay Thai Kickboxing classes.
I want to lose weight, can your school and programs help me?

Absolutely. Both our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing classes offer a fantastic workout that you cannot achieve through your typical gym routines. These classes involve your entire body and will develop and challenge your physical abilities. We have had many students who have combined healthy eating with our jiu-jitsu programs to lose great amounts of weight. At BJJ Unlimited, we promote a healthy diet, have knowledgeable staff to assist you in this area, and frequently post health-related articles and tips on nutrition and fitness on this website. What does a typical class consist of?

Each class begins with a warm-up and stretching routine designed to prepare your body for the actual class and help reduce injuries. After the warm-up, technical instruction begins. How much technique is shown varies according to the instructor's goals for that particular class and to allow for more live sparring or rolling. The live sparring and rolling is the most essential part of every class. It allows students to practice the techniques they have learned against a resisting partner, break a sweat and reap the rewards of a high intensity workout.
Do you offer family discounts?

Yes. Please speak with staff regarding the discounts available to family members.
What is the cost of membership?

Pricing will depend on each individual's needs. We encourage prospective students to try out an introductory class so that we can assess each individual's goals and determine what he or she would like to get out of training. We can then make a recommendation for frequency of training and what classes would be best suited for each individual.
Do you offer classes for kids and at what age do you start at?

Yes. We have one of the top programs in the country have produced several State, National and World champions.  Currently we offer classes with emphasis both in Judo andJiu Jitsu and enroll students as young as 5 years old.
