CollarSleeve.com has announced that they have created a new IBJJF ranking website called IBJJFRankings.comĀ
Check out the details of their ranking system below.
How Does the New IBJJF Ranking Website Work?
The crew at CollarSleeve developed a BJJ-specific ELO system that assigns dynamic ratings to IBJJF competitors based on their performances.Ā
Instead of the traditional point rankings, the ELO system awards points based on the level of competition faced. Basically, instead of awarding a ranking based on medals, this new IBJJF ranking website ranks you on the level of competition you beat.
Belt-Specific Ratings
This new IBJJF ranking website has given each belt level its own ELO pool. The system calculated a value system for each belt after highlighting over 150,000 matches.
Through this analysis of matches at different belt levels, the system uses these stats to evaluate competitors. As you progress through the ranks, the system tracks your progress and shows how you did at each level of competition.
Weight Class Adjustments
Over 8000 open class matches were analyzed to determine how much weight and size matter at each belt level.Ā For open-weight matches, not only is the skill of the competitors factored in, but also the differences in size.
The system will award more points to a smaller competitor and less to the bigger opponent.Ā
Age Division ConsiderationsĀ
To further create a more effective rating system, this new IBJJF ranking system wanted to understand the effect of age differences. The system creators went through thousands of matches who competed in multiple age categories to see if age differences mattered.
The net result is that you can compare ratings across age categories and belt ranks.Ā
Live & Historical Rankings
Something that annoys many IBJJF competitors is that the organization doesnāt archive match results. CollarandSleeveās new IBJJF ranking system will preserve all match results from every IBJJF competition.
The website will be updated in real-time after each event and every match from every level will be cataloged. You can see exactly how your rating rose and fell after every match.
An example of the live brackets:

Predictive Ability
Before each match, the new IBJJF website releases a win/loss probability for each of the competitors. The system will take the rankings of each competitor and come up with a statistical guess of who will win.
After each match is completed, the new data will be entered and the rankings will change.Ā
No Manual Bias
When you look at the rankings of Flograppling, you can see that they have a bias in their choices. Within this new IBJJF ranking website, everything is calculated using competition results with no subjective ranking decisions.
All rankings are systematic and done through the system. Everything is automatically updated within the systemās algorithm with no personal bias factoring into the current rankings.
There is only one way to raise your rankings within the system and that is by winning. The more matches you win, the higher your ranking will be.
The Future Top Ranking System?
In their Reddit posts, the creators of this new system promise that their website is here to stay. They are incredibly passionate about the sport and want to do everything they can to improve it.
This is a cool idea and we hope that the creators of IBJJF Rankings find success with their new website. Weāll see if BJJ athletes and fans embrace this new ranking system.

Bobby is martial artist for almost 20 years with a BJJ black belt under Professor Sergio Miranda. He is also a karate black and former combat sports athlete, who loves all things grappling.
