Aljamain Sterling may be a former UFC champion, but even he isn’t immune to being caught in an unexpected submission – especially when stepping into unfamiliar territory.
During filming for the latest season of the Russian MMA reality show ALF Global Reality, Sterling found himself in a spontaneous grappling match with Russian veteran Marif Piraev…And it ended with him tapping out.
While not an official bout, the friendly match took place inside the cage, in front of the cast and crew.Sterling, who’s on the show as a guest coach alongside longtime rival Petr Yan, appeared to agree to the exhibition match in good spirits.
While Piraev, a seasoned competitor in the Russian MMA scene, proved to be a formidable opponent.
This isn’t the first viral moment from Sterling’s stint on ALF Global Reality.Earlier footage showed him getting caught off guard by a surprise rear-naked choke from another cast member…
But in this case, it was a legitimate back-and-forth that both fighters entered willingly.
Despite Sterling’s wrestling credentials and previous experience in professional Jiu-Jitsu events, Piraev’s grappling skills were on full display.
With over 30 professional MMA wins, including 15 submissions, Piraev is one of Russia’s most experienced and versatile fighters. He’s never been submitted in MMA competition, and it showed here.
