On August 7, 2022, the Jiu-Jitsu community was devastated by the tragic loss of one of its greatest icons, eight-time world champion Leandro Lo.
Lo, only 33 years old, was brutally murdered during a pagode show in São Paulo – but his legacy continues to inspire and resonate within the Jiu-Jitsu community.
Leandro Lo’s mother, Fátima Lo, recently spoke to Tatame about her son’s enduring influence and the two years since his passing:
I knew about Leandro’s strength in Jiu-Jitsu due to his titles and charisma…I saw how great he is, the true champion of the people.
Everyone has a good story to tell about him, they have a lot of affection for him, every day someone comes to tell me about him, that he continues to inspire.
I know he will never be forgotten for his achievements and, mainly, for the incredible person he was and how much he dedicated himself to get where he is.
The Jiu-Jitsu community has rallied around Fátima and her family, providing comfort and support:
The Jiu-Jitsu community has welcomed us since Leandro left, always comforting me with messages and requests for justice.I feel like I’m not alone.
This support has made all the difference. This love and affection for Leandro has been passed on to us, especially to me.As a mother, I am very grateful for all of this.
