jiu-jitsu é a única arte marcial que tem família” (Jiu-Jitsu is the only martial art that has a family)
Team switching in Jiu-Jitsu is a very controversial topic that will always provoke different points of views and arguments among the BJJ community. Throughout Jiu-Jitsu history, there have always been individuals that have gone their own way, leaving their initial team or master, to either join another team or create their own. This is what many people know as “Creontes”.
Tayane Porfírio, one of the most decorated athletes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, has officially returned to Alliance, the team where she earned her black belt and achieved historic success. After five years representing other organizations, including Gracie Barra, Roger Gracie Academy, and Double Five, the Rio de Janeiro native announced her homecoming during the Alliance Diamond Experience event this past weekend.
In an exclusive interview with TATAME, Tayane expressed her excitement and gratitude for rejoining Alliance, stating:“I am announcing my return to Alliance. I was away for a while, but a good daughter returns home. I am back here and on December 7th, I will compete in my first championship for Alliance again. I’m counting on your support, whether you’re there in person or watching online. I will be at BJJ Stars.”
Her comeback will debut at BJJ Stars 14 on December 7th in São Paulo, where she faces Giovanna Jara.
A Storied Career with Alliance
Under Alliance’s banner, Tayane achieved unparalleled success, including double gold at the 2017 IBJJF Grand Slam, where she claimed World, Brazilian, Pan, and European titles—an unprecedented feat in women’s Jiu-Jitsu. These accomplishments cemented her legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Challenges and Resilience
Tayane’s departure from Alliance in 2019 followed a major setback. She tested positive in an anti-doping test conducted by USADA during the 2018 World Championships, leading to a four-year suspension and the forfeiture of her gold medals in the weight and absolute divisions. Despite this adversity, she continued to train and remained a prominent figure in Jiu-Jitsu.
A New Chapter
Now reunited with Alliance, Tayane’s return marks a new chapter in her career, as she looks to reclaim her place at the top of the sport. Her upcoming match at BJJ Stars is eagerly anticipated by fans and highlights her determination to compete at the highest level once again.
With her return to the team where she first rose to prominence, Tayane Porfírio’s story exemplifies resilience, loyalty, and a passion for Jiu-Jitsu.
