Craig Jones recently shared the hilarious story of his first experience with PEDs — thanks to his local dr*g dealer.
While reflecting on his competitive history and long-running relationship with fellow Australian grappler Lachlan Giles, Jones explained how he decided to bulk up ahead of the 2017 ADCC Championships.
And, well, that decision led to an unforgettable first encounter with steroids:
I remember the drug dealer gave me the first injection of steroids because he thought he knew how to do it.
He completely missed the mark and I swear he hit a bone in there or something…And I was hobbling around like I’d had a bad night at a gay bar for a while.
Couldn’t pull guard for a while.
Jones shared the story in the context of his earlier struggles competing undersized at ADCC 2015, where he entered the 88-kilo division weighing only 80 kilos:
I remember just being like, there’s no way I’m showing up to ADCC 2017 at 80 kilos again, giving up an 18 pound weight advantage here.
I already was a shi**y Australian grappler facing the elite guys in the world.I’m not coming in light.
That decision to use PEDs didn’t exactly sit well with his training partner Lachlan Giles, who stayed natural throughout his career:
Lachlan being the clean athlete he is, I got to just take steroids and grow bigger. And we’d have scraps in the gym, but the size advantage helped me a lot.
And it would cause him great displeasure. And I got to have the revenge of just being a bit bigger, steroided up dude.
Jones joked that his rapid gains left Giles suspicious:
He’d be like: “How did you get so much stronger and bigger overnight?”
I told him it was the fruits and vegetables.
