Disaster strikes the ONE 168: Denver card once again. ONE flyweight grappling champion Mikey Musumeci missed weight for his last-minute replacement fight against Bebeto Oliveira.
Full details below ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Mikey Musumeci Misses Weight
Mikey Musumeci was originally scheduled to fight at 155 lbs against Kade Ruotolo for the CJI champ’s ONE title. However, as we reported earlier this week, Bebeto Oliveira stepped in on short notice to face Musumeci.
What we didn’t know was the belt would be for the flyweight title. This meant that Musumeci only had 72 hours to cut from 170 lbs to the official title fight weight of 135 lbs.
Musumeci broke the news himself on Instagram, explaining his failed weight cut. He failed to make weight, as well as ONE’s hydration test.
What Now?
Musumeci’s opponent, Bebeto Oliveira, made weight and passed the hydration test. If he can pull off an upset win, he is eligible to win the title.
However, ONE has not yet revealed if Oliveira has accepted a catch-weight match with the champion.
A Complete Disaster
I have no idea what ONE Championship was thinking of switching a lightweight match to a flyweight on such short notice.
A 35 lb weight cut without preparation in less than 72 hours is almost impossible. Musumeci is lucky he didn’t permanently damage himself from this attempt.
Both ONE and Mikey made a foolish choice trying to make this match on short-notice. The event is tonight, so I guess we’ll see what happens.
