John Danaher: “Everyone Has Some Special Gift In Jiu-Jitsu”
How’s your Jiu-Jitsu journey going so far? Not as well as you’d like it to, right?
Well, even if you think that you don’t have something special to offer to the game, John Danaher does.He believes that everyone has a special gift that they can offer in Jiu-Jitsu:
I’ve always believed that everyone has some special attribute that they possess which, if used properly, will govern them a measure of advantage against their opponents.
This gift varies wildly from person to person, but each of us must identify it and try to use it to maximum effect. For some people it’s an obvious physical feature, strength, reach, speed. For others it’s a mental attribute, toughness, determination, a calm demeanor in chaos.
Sometimes it’s less obvious – an attribute such as patience isn’t always easy to see but can be of tremendous value in the long haul.
Danaher also shares an example of Gordon Ryan to better illustrate his point:
When you look within yourself it may not be immediately obvious.
For example, I’ve always considered one of Gordon Ryan’s best attributes that contributes significantly to his success is memory. He has an astounding memory for Jiu Jitsu information and his ability to make Jiu jitsu an information battle makes this a serious weapon in his arsenal.
We don’t ordinarily think of memory as a relevant attribute in Jiu jitsu but he made it one of his best.
So the end message? Know thyself:
The better you know yourself the better you can build a game around who you are and the better the armor of your jiu jitsu will fit your body.
Sloth Jiu-Jitsu: you can be slow and unathletic and still kick butt in Jiu-Jitsu.
