The Craig Jones Invitational (CJI) faced an unexpected setback – as Mason Fowler announced his withdrawal from the tournament at the last minute.
Fowler, a prominent and highly anticipated competitor, was set to be one of the top contenders in the over 80kg division.He had also faced Nicky Rodriguez – one of the tournament favorites – at UFC Fight Pass Invitational 7, where he lost on points. So, this match was a key motivator for Fowler, as he was eager for a rematch and the chance to even the score with Rodriguez.
Additionally, Fowler’s decision to compete at CJI also came at a cost; as he had initially accepted a public invitation to ADCC 2024, a prestigious grappling event.The creation of CJI forced him to make a tough choice, and he opted to leave ADCC to join the new tournament.
Therefore, his withdrawal now not only leaves a gap that the event organizers will need to fill quickly – but also probably leaves Fowler himself without competition options.
