Mikey Musumeci has revealed that UFC BJJ plans to begin testing athletes for PEDs – a significant move that could reshape the grappling landscape!
The announcement slipped under the radar during a Q&A session on Musumeci’s Instagram, but its implications are substantial.
Currently, only a handful of major grappling organizations – most notably the IBJJF and UAEJJF – conduct any testing at all, and even then, it’s typically reserved for champions or medalists. As a result, many of the sport’s top athletes have never undergone any testing, and several openly admit to PED use. This has posed a long-standing issue for Jiu-Jitsu’s legitimacy as it tries to gain broader appeal with mainstream audiences.
While UFC’s recent entry into professional Jiu-Jitsu via UFC BJJ has sparked mixed reactions, Musumeci sees the decision to implement testing as a much-needed positive step.
The announcement comes just ahead of the debut season of UFC BJJ, which features Musumeci and Rerisson Gabriel as coaches.
The season will crown three champions across the lightweight, welterweight, and bantamweight divisions, with Musumeci and Gabriel facing off for the bantamweight title in the finale.
