As expected, former wrestling champion Pat Downey barreled over the competition at the 2024 No-Gi Worlds. Unfortunately, he was disqualified for taunting and his Russian opponent started a fist-fight on the mat.
Pat Downey’s Performance & DQ
Pat Downey had a rather easy time decisively beating all five of his opponents at No-GI Worlds. He did not get a single point scored on him while submitting all five of his opponents.
In the finals, Pat put his Russian opponent to sleep with a front headlock to win the title. After winning the match, Downey made a slit-throat motion to the opposing team, which upset them.
When his opponent woke up, he was angry and began pushing Downey, and a few strikes were thrown.
On Instagram, Pat confirmed that his opponent was served with a 2-year ban for starting the fight. Downey was also disqualified for taunting his opponent and lost his gold medal.
“I got DQ’d for my celebration action, while he was taking a nap. He got banned for two years for throwing that temper tantrum he threw upon waking up from his slumber 😂”- Pat Downey
Pat Downey Promoted to Purple Belt
On the plus side for Pat Downey, he was promoted to purple belt by his coach after the competition. Unhappy about his disqualification, he announced on Instagram that this was the last time for the IBJJF
“🖕🖕🖕 @ibjjf for not giving me my GOLD medal that I earned by submitting and outscoring EVERY opponent… I promise this is the last time this federation will ever get to profit off of my performance. Any promotions that are not softer than baby shit, feel free to hit my line. Competing is my favorite thing in the world. I’m the best blue belt on earth!”- Pat Downey
Guess we’ll see Downey compete against a higher level of competition next year at Polaris and maybe CJI 2.

Bobby is martial artist for almost 20 years with a BJJ black belt under Professor Sergio Miranda. He is also a karate black and former combat sports athlete, who loves all things grappling.
