In one of the most blatant acts of cheating we’ve seen in years, a No-Gi purple belt competitor forced his opponent to reap him to get a DQ win against his opponent.
Read how this cheap move and critical error cost a competitor his dream of a world title.
Purple Belt Forces Reap to Get DQ Win
This story was initially broken by ADCC medalist and highly respected coach, Lachlan Giles. In an Instagram post, Giles posted video of his purple belt student’s match and how he was cheated
From the video, you can clearly see purple belt competitor Caleb Brown force Zach Ayman to reap him. When Brown moved Layman’s leg over, he quickly motioned to the ref, who stopped the match and called the match.
Ayman was disqualified and Williams moved on to the next round in the purple belt division. The Australian grappler spend thousands of dollars of his own to travel to No-Gi Worlds just to get blatantly cheated.
“Zach Ayman flew all the way from Australia for this to happen in the first round at World’s. It went to a video review and he still got disqualified.”- Lachlan Giles
IBJJF Ref Issues Continue
If it wasn’t bad enough that Williams got away with cheating, the refs reviewed the match and still upheld the ruling. BJJ athletes have been complaining about the inconsistencies of IBJJF referees for years, but this is the worst offense.
When people are paying thousands of dollars to compete for a “world championship,” the refs cannot blow a call this badly. If the IBJJF has any integrity, they will issue a formal apology to Ayman and right this situation.
Nobody deserves to lose like this and the world’s biggest BJJ organization cannot allow this to happen.
