Interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has been chasing one fight since capturing the interim title last November. Aspinall wants to fight heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones in a unification bout.
Jones was scheduled to face former two-time titleholder Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 on the fight card that Aspinall won the interim championship, but was forced out of the fight due a torn pectoral muscle. The fight promotion decided to rebook the Jones and Miocic bout.
Aspinall defended his interim championship at UFC 304 on July 27 by stopping Curtis Blaydes in just 60 seconds. Instead of calling out Jones again, Aspinall has taken a different approach. He’s calling for Miocic to be removed much like President Joe Biden removed himself from the Democratic party ticket.
“Get Stipe out of there. Let’s be honest, the guy is 43-years old. He’s had a four-year layoff, and his last fight was a knockout loss,” Aspinall told TNT Sports. “Granted, he’s an absolute legend in the sport. He’s the best heavyweight ever, like statistically. He’s the best heavyweight ever, but the guy needs to be pulled out of the race. The guy needs to be Joe Biden’d. He’s too old.”
“No one is interested anymore,” Aspinall continued. “And I respect Stipe a lot. Pull him out. Stick me in. It is right. Get Joe Biden out of there. Stick me in.”
