A video from a BJJ competition from the Phillippines is going viral which shows a ref being attacked by an irate father after the official failed to notice his daughter was unconscious.
Dad Headbutts Ref
A match between two white belt girls recently took place at a BJJ event in the Philippines. From the video, you can see the girl in the black gi get put in a submission and go limp.
The referee was slow to react which led to the girl’s coach rushing in to revive her. Moments after, the father of the competitor rushes in and headbutts the ref.
The father then yells profanities at the ref as the official walks off the mat. Thankfully, the incident didn’t turn into a full-on melee and the girl was okay.
The Referee’s Excuse
According to witnesses at the event, the referee was allegedly working long hours and had little breaks throughout the day.
This incident unfortunately shows the glaring problems with officiating in the sport. Many BJJ referees still aren’t properly trained or fit for the job.
We still have a lot of work to do to fix the sport and keep incidents like this from happening.
