This Friday, June 13, FloGrappling’s Who’s Number One (WNO) will return to action with a card headlined by a middleweight title match between defending champion Jonnatas Gracie and current welterweight titleholder Mica Galvao.
Mica Galvao vs. Jonnatas Gracie
Still just 21 years old and a few years into his black belt campaign, Galvao has firmly planted his flag as one of the planet’s top pound-for-pound grapplers in both gi and no-gi competition.
He has lost just once at WNO, dropping a closely contested decision to Tye Ruotolo back in 2021. Since then, he’s scored impressive victories over the likes of PJ Barch, Dante Leon, and, in his most recent WNO appearance, a submission win over Kenta Iwamoto.
In 2024, Galvao claimed gold in the 77kg division at the ADCC World Championships before suffering a submission loss to Leon in the quarterfinals of the absolute division.
For his part, Gracie has quietly emerged as one of the no-gi world’s most dangerous competitors. He won gold at the 2022 IBJJF No-Gi Worlds but was subsequently stripped of that title due to a doping violation. Since then, he’s earned an ADCC South American Trials silver medal and picked WNO victories over Oliver Taza and Jacob Couch.
This match could play out in a variety of ways. Galvao is an explosive athlete and a well-rounded grappler, but he is at his most dangerous when he’s countering his opponent’s attacks with submission threats of his own. He’s capable of finishing the match in the blink of an eye, whether that’s by taking the back and sinking in the choke or hitting one of his trademark armbars in a scramble.
In the other corner, Gracie is a tactically minded grappler who will methodically work his way toward the submission. Known as one of the sport’s strongest pound-for-pound competitors, he’s proven to be skilled in all areas but will likely want to take top position and look for guard passes against Galvao.
Xande Ribeiro vs. Kit Dale
Before that, all-time great Xande Ribeiro will return to take on Australia’s Kit Dale in a light heavyweight tilt.
A multiple-time ADCC and IBJJF world champion in both gi and no-gi, the 44-year-old Ribeiro boasts an incredible competitive career that spans well more than two decades. After suffering a first-round exit at the 2022 ADCC World Championships, he took an extended stay on the sidelines, leading many fans to assume he had retired.
In April, at WNO 27, Ribeiro returned to competition with a dominant submission victory over 10th Planet standout Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez. He’ll continue his late-career comeback tour against another athlete who had seemingly retired in Dale.
The Australian first made a name for himself in 2017 when he claimed gold at the ADCC Asian Trials. While he would lose in the first round of the ADCC World Championships, he remained one of his country’s most prominent submission grapplers.
Dale appeared to have retired from competition in 2021, but returned earlier this year to compete in the CJI Trials (“Giles Trials”), where he put up a strong showing before losing by submission to Declan Moody.
While Ribeiro is a superb top player and pressure passer, he’s more likely to try to work from his legendary closed guard. For his part, Dale is a talented guard passer and back-taker.
The rest of the card at WNO 28
Lower on the card, Dory Aoun will look for the biggest victory of his career when he squares off with multiple-time IBJJF world champion and ADCC silver medalist Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa. Also, Legion AJJ black belt Paige Ivette will square off with Kauane Ramos, a multiple-time brown belt world champion who’s hungry to make her mark at the black belt level.
Before that, decorated gi competitor and CJI finalist Fellipe Andrew will take on ADCC Trials champion Declan Moody, and 10th Planet leg lock specialist Kyle Chambers will face long-time black belt veteran Victor Silveirio.
